Introduction to 3D Animation - Elliott & the CD Player
This was the first part of my coursework for "Introduction to 3D Animation" in the first semester of the second year (Jan-April 2017) of my degree, and thus the very first 3D animation I storyboarded and created. It's only rendered as a playblast (not a full render), and meant to focus on animation (a short one, supposedly 11-18 seconds long), and the interaction of the rigged model provided with an object of our choosing! Themes were given, and I based my animation on the human/animal behaviour that is curiosity, since I'm quite curious myself, and the fact that I've seen some children not know what a CD player was ^^. So meet Elliott, a boy who enquires as to what this very low-poly and rough model of a CD player is :).
Final Storyboards
I got to storyboard for the second time of my life, and I had some variations in terms of storyboards, but those are the ones I ended up following for the animation. The original beginning would have shown the CD player and Elliott already standing in front of it, looking confused, but I wanted to practice walkcycles a little bit, and have more movement and narrative, so I changed it to the storyboards below :) An alternate ending also had Elliott slowly closing the CD Player back down, before looking straight at the camera, in an accomplice way ^^. Note that I haven't included the silhouettes version of my boards, where I was looking for strong poses and composition, but it's a very useful technique to utilise!
Animation Playblast
As a fan of "mute" cartoons such as Roadrunner and the older versions of Tom & Jerry, I really enjoyed making this animation and trying to convey a narrative without spoken words, but still following a music (though, in this case, the music was actually put later on and adapted to the animation ^^). This was all animated in Maya 2016, and I'd love to spend more time practicing 3D animation when I get the time :) Hope you've enjoyed this!
Thanks for passing by!
