3D Animation - Parley!
As the first part of my animation module in third year (September-December 2017), we were tasked with choosing an audio clip between 11 and 18 seconds, and creating a 3D animation based on it to show a character performance and lip-sync. Rather than choosing from the proposed audio clips, I decided to pick a scene from Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean, because I really like pirates, it was inspiring, and this movie series remains one of my favourites of all times (and its soundtrack is simply wonderful, but I digress). This was my second 3D animation project, from storyboarding through to final playblast render, and allowed me to practice 3D animation more including learning how to use stepped keys, a better animation workflow with blocking, and using and understanding the Graph Editor better. Due to certain circumstances throughout the semester and time constraints, I was unable to really polish everything the way I would've liked to, but I'm still happy with how it turned out, and think it definitely shows progress since my last animation! So here are my storyboards and the final playblast render based on a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean!
Storyboards
These are the storyboards I created for the animation. The first two are the original ones, with the next three created as possible alternative shots & extra frames for an animatic.
Animatic
I created an animatic (for the first time), using my storyboards' frames to try and test the timing the animation before beginning it in Maya, to serve as a reference. I was still not sure how to really handle the part with Ragetti getting mad at the "mad men who thought of parley", and the move I pictured Jack doing for the ending didn't quite translate in drawings at the time, but due to time restrictions I decided to move forward with the 3D animation and test it there, to better visualise it.
Final Playblast
And here we go, after using a better workflow than the first time I 3D-animated (and still working on polishing it, because practice makes perfect, and I did manage to put some tongue movement that is subtle to see in some shots ^^), here is the final playblast I submitted as my coursework. Hope you enjoy it!
This was all animated with Maya 2016 :)
Thanks for passing by!
